Art & Prose (1/7). Erda’s Prophecy
"The Ring of the Nibelung" in the paintings of Marina Podgaevskaya
Marina Podgaevskaya. Erda’s Prophecy (Das Rheingold)
Strange deeds unfold in ancient times. The supreme god Wotan inscribed the laws of the world order on the shaft of his spear—only to break them himself.
He discovered that the Nibelung Alberich had stolen gold from the Rhinemaidens and forged from it a ring that grants power over the world. “To steal what was stolen—from a thief—is that not how property began?” Wotan muses, and seizes the ring by force.
The goddess of wisdom, Erda, emerges from the depths of the earth to warn Wotan of the twilight of the gods, which will come if he does not return the stolen gold to the Rhinemaidens.
In Marina Podgaevskaya’s painting, Erda rises from the globe. Her daughters, the prophetic Norns, weave the fates of the world from their mother’s hair. But the strands slip through their fingers, and flames are reflected in the mirror, which Erda holds toward the clear sky.
