Art & Prose (2/7). Fasolt and Fafner
"The Ring of the Nibelung" in the paintings of Marina Podgaevskaya
Marina Podgaevskaya. Fasolt and Fafner (Das Rheingold)
The first victim of Erda’s prophecy is the proud race of giants. Fasolt and Fafner built a celestial castle for the gods—Valhalla. As a reward, Wotan promised the giants the beautiful goddess of youth, Freia. But he never actually intended to give her away—he hoped to come up with a way to avoid it in time. In the end, the giants demanded the Ring of the Nibelung as payment for their labour.
Marina Podgaevskaya’s painting tells of what happens next. Upon receiving the Ring, the brothers immediately begin to fight for the right to possess it. Fafner kills his brother and transforms into a dragon, brooding over his hoard. The gold brings joy neither to him nor to the new inhabitants of Valhalla.
