Art & Prose (6/7). Siegfried and Brünnhilde
"The Ring of the Nibelung" in the paintings of Marina Podgaevskaya
Marina Podgaevskaya. Siegfried and Brünnhilde (Siegfried)
Siegfried was born, grew up, and endured many trials. He defeated the dragon Fafner and took possession of the Ring of the Nibelung—as if it were nothing more than a pretty trinket. Wotan, in the guise of the Wanderer, tried to block his path with his spear, but Siegfried shattered the god’s weapon and hurried toward the high rock surrounded by fire.
Passing through the flames, the hero found a beautiful sleeping maiden atop the cliff. He awakened her with a kiss—for a passionate, earthly love. Siegfried had no idea that Brünnhilde would one day rid the world of the Ring’s curse for the sake of that very love. And the former Valkyrie herself didn’t yet realize it either: she accepted the Ring as a gift from the man she loved, never imagining she would have to part with it or return it to the daughters of the Rhine.
In Marina’s painting, Brünnhilde appears shy. She has not yet realized that she has transformed from a divine being into a fragile, mortal woman.
