Art & Prose (7/7). Twilight of the Gods
"The Ring of the Nibelung" in the paintings of Marina Podgaevskaya
Marina Podgaevskaya. Twilight of the Gods (Götterdämmerung)
The curse of the Ring of the Nibelung did not allow Brünnhilde to fully enjoy her happiness. Siegfried fell victim to witchcraft, deceived and betrayed his wife, and met his death soon after.
This tragic turn restored Brünnhilde’s divine knowledge and purpose. She ordered a great funeral pyre to be built for Siegfried and, placing the Ring on her finger, rode into the flames on her horse. Let the fire cleanse the Ring of its curse, and let the waters of the Rhine carry it back into their depths forever.
Now, people on earth watch as the flames rise to the heavens, engulfing Valhalla. The Rhinemaidens leap from the river, seize the cursed gold, and vanish beneath the waves. The blaze ascends higher and higher—until a shimmering light of azure and emerald begins to stream over the land: the light of a new, beautiful life—of joy, happiness, and love.
